George Andries Roth (1809 - 1887)

George Andries Roth, (Amsterdam 1809-1887). Landscape painter and contemporary of BC Koekkoek. Romance.

Life and work: He was a student of PG Westenberg (1791-1873). In the years 1835-36 Roth made a study trip through Germany along the Rhine and Ruhr, as did more romantic painters. Roth lived in Amsterdam for most of his life, with some short stays in Opheusden as interludes (1878-'79 and 1885-'86).

Roth mostly painted woodland landscapes, but also some city and river views. From 1839 he was registered as a member at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. He taught among others Elias van Bommel and CP 't Hoen. Museums: including Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Gemeentemuseum in Arnhem.
