JE van Heemskerk van Beest (1828 - 1894)

Jacob Eduard van Heemskerck van Beest, (Kampen, February 28, 1828 - The Hague, December 24, 1894), was a Dutch naval officer and painter.

 

Life and work: Van Heemskerck, a member of the Van Heemskerck family, was a son of lieutenant colonel and captain-terzee Jhr Dirk van Heemskerck van Beest (1779-1845) and his third wife Lucia Onno Zwiera van Ingen (1796-1870). In 1852 he married Geertruida Berendina de Feyfer (1829-1901) with whom he had six children. He joined the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1842. He was promoted to lieutenant there but resigned from military service in 1853. From then on he devoted himself entirely to art. He was a student of Dirk van Lokhorst. Van Heemskerck mainly painted seascapes and landscapes. He became the teacher of his daughter, Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876-1923), among others.
