Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek (1843 - 1927)
Pieter Hendrik 'HP' Koekkoek, (Hilversum, 1843 -1927, Amsterdam). Romantic-realistic.
Life and work: The oeuvre of Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek is much less known in our country than that of his cousins and contemporaries. This may be due to the fact that he lived alternately in Holland and England, and also lived abroad for a long time after 1890.
As the only son of Marinus Adrianus, he was trained by his father as a romantic landscape painter after 1855. This artistic legacy is evident in the work he made in the 1960s and 1970s: finely elaborated wooded landscapes with farmers, travelers and fishermen in a romantic lighting. In doing so, he deliberately ignored the emerging impressionism of the painters in The Hague, Oosterbeek and Laren. In the following English period, the painter opted for a more realistic style, although he stuck to forest views and winter landscapes. Pieter Hendrik usually signed his paintings with 'HP Koekkoek'.
