  • THE ARTIST

Christiaan Cornelis Kannemans (Breda, July 13, 1812 - Aldaar, January 3, 1884) was a Dutch painter and photographer. Romance.

Life and work: He was one of the first sea painters from North Brabant. Noord-Brabant had no professional sea painters before the nineteenth century. The first Brabant artists to specialize in painting seascapes worked from West Brabant, from Bergen op Zoom like David Kleyne, or from Breda like Christiaan Kannemans.

Christaan Kannemans started his career as a house painter in Breda. He managed to build a successful career as a painter. With the support of some patrons, including King William II, he received commissions and was able to make study trips along the Dutch, French and English coast. There he collected sketches with which he composed seascapes in oil paint in his studio. He was a specialist in the romantic genre of 'turbulent water' and ship disasters. He was also one of the first photographers in Breda. He concluded his career as an art teacher at the Royal Military Academy.
