THE ARTIST
Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen, born as Dommelhuizen (Utrecht, 11 November 1842 - The Hague, 23 May 1928), was a Dutch painter and watercolourist.
Life and work: Dommersen signed his work with CC Dommershuizen, Chr. Dommelshuizen, Christian Dommelshuizen and C. Dommersen. Dommersen was born in Utrecht in 1842 as Cornelis Christiaan Dommelhuizen, illegitimate son of Cornelia Dommelhuizen. His elder brother, Pieter Cornelis Dommersen, born in 1833 as Pieter Cornelis Dommershuisen), was also a painter and illegitimate son of Cornelia Dommershuisen. This brother moved to England around 1860 and had a son William Raymond Dommersen (Dommerson), who also became a painter.
Dommersen specialized in sea and river views because of the revival of sea painting during the 19th century. That is why he traveled a lot abroad and also painted in America, Belgium, England and France. He also painted genre paintings, landscapes and historical scenes. His work has been exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam, among others. Dommersen was married twice. After the death of his first wife, Henriette Jeanne Philippo in 1903, he remarried in 1904 to the widow Carolina Maria Frederika de Geus. He died in May 1928 at the age of 85 in the Municipal Hospital in his hometown The Hague. He was buried on May 26, 1928 in the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery in The Hague.
