THE ARTIST
Martinus Schouman, (Dordrecht, January 29, 1770 - Breda, October 30, 1848), was a Dutch painter, watercolorist and draftsman of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries best known for his seascapes and paintings with ships.
Life and work: Schouman was born in Dordrecht and was the apprentice and great-nephew of the painter Aart Schouman. His pupils were Pieter Arnout Dijxhoorn, Jan de Greef (1784-1834), Pieter Martinus Gregoor, Matthijs Quispel, Johannes Christiaan Schotel and his son Izaak Schouman.
He is best known for his seascapes and landscapes. He was a member of the Dordrecht artists' society Pictura and of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels.
