THE ARTIST
Willem George Frederik Jansen (1971 - 1949), The Hague School.
Life and work: He was born December 25, 1871 in Harlingen and died June 21, 1949 in Blaricum. He was destined to become a train driver but decided to become an artist at the age of 21. He attended the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Haarlem, became a pottery painter and chief designer at the Rozenburg ceramics factory in The Hague. When he settled permanently in Blaricum in 1908, he was fully employed as a painter. Jansen painted, watercolors, drew, etched and lithographed landscapes, river views, city and beach views in the style of the Hague School. It is counted among the secondary bloom of that school.
He is known as a skilled painter with a smooth brushwork and a beautiful use of color. His work has been purchased by the Singer Museum in Laren and the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen. In 2010 an extensive catalog about his work and life was published by Hugo ter Avest on the occasion of a retrospective exhibition in Museum Het Hannemahuis in his hometown Harlingen.
